James Lee "Jim" Buck

James Lee "Jim" Buck, born on March 21, 1938, in Atchison, Kansas, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025, in Independence, Missouri surrounded by family. He leaves behind a legacy shaped not just by his remarkable career, but also by the love and compassion he demonstrated throughout his life.

For thirty years, Jim served as a firefighter in Independence, embodying the bravery and selflessness that define this noble profession. His commitment to his community went far beyond his work; he was a man who understood the value of hard work and instilled strong work ethics in his children, ensuring they carried forward his legacy of diligence and dedication.

Jim was a true renaissance man, he appreciated the finer things in life. He was not just a skilled firefighter but also a passionate collector, carpenter, and photographer. Known for his keen eye for detail, he approached carpentry and woodworking with the hands of an artisan and the soul of an artist. His creations were not merely projects; they were expressions of love and creativity that he shared with those lucky enough to come into his life.

Above all, Jim will be remembered for the compassion he showed as he lovingly cared for his beloved wife, Verona, at home for ten years during her battle with dementia. This chapter of his life highlighted his unwavering dedication to family and his ability to find strength in the face of adversity.

A proud graduate of Northeast High School, Jim's journey was enriched by the relationships he formed along the way. His personality radiated the qualities of a genuinely good man—funny, witty, and kind. Each memory shared with him serves as a testament to the impact he made on the lives of others.

James is survived by his children, John Buck (Marilyn), Travis Buck (Jennifer) and Patti Johnson (Stuart); brother, Kenny Buck (Linda); sister, Karen Hamilton; grandchildren, Laura, Abigail, Lucas, Jonas and Morgan; great-grandchildren, Hadleigh Mae and Apollos and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Margaret (Doyle) Buck; beloved wife, Verona and nephew, Robbie Buck.

Jim’s memorial service will take place on March 21, 2025, at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, Missouri. The service will begin at 2:00 PM, where family and friends will gather to honor and celebrate a life well-lived. Please wear casual or business casual attire.
