James Arnold Dorton Sr 

June 1, 1949 – October 18, 2024

Jim passed away peacefully at the age of 75 at the Ignite – St Mary’s Medical Resort in Blue Springs, MO.

Jim worked as a mixer/blender at the Lipton Tea Plant in Independence from 1972 – 2003. After which he enjoyed his life of retirement spending many hours on the lake fishing with his best friend Phil Atkinson and watching sports. 

Jim spent many hours volunteering with The Salvation Army in Independence, MO, between working on the canteens with the SAAC teams for disasters, and most Christmas seasons were spent running bell ringers, picking up Angel Tree donations and counting the kettles each evening. 

He is survived by daughter, Diana (William) Mitchell, sons, Charles (Rhonda) Dorton, Samuel Dorton and James Dorton Jr, Sisters/Brother, Cecilia (Roger) Senn, Sharon (Harold) Bane, Patricia (Robert) Davis, Bernice Collier, Cynthia (Richard) Roberts, Kenneth Dorton, and Christina (Jeffrey) Hanton, Nine (9) grandchildren and Eleven (11) great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded by wife Laura (Collins) Dorton, parents Cecil and Ernestine (Trent) Dorton, daughter Jennifer Shuman, sisters Frances Gaff and Glenda Brown, granddaughter Antonia Mitchell.

Services will be held at The Salvation Army at 14700 E Truman Road, Independence, MO 64050 on November 2, 2024, at 11:00 am. 

In lieu of flowers the family is asking for contributions The Salvation Army – Independence Christmas Kettles.
