James "Jim" Woodson Combs, a man of many talents and a heart full of love, passed away on May 28, 2024, in Independence, Missouri. He was 81 years old.
Jim was born on October 3, 1942, in Kansas City, Kansas to George and Lena Combs. A deep love of service and dedication marked his life. He served our country honorably for 12 years in the U.S. Army, spending most of his service time in Germany. During his time in the military, Jim learned the language fluently and exemplified courage and commitment to his fellow soldiers. After returning home, Jim embarked on a varied career path that showcased his versatility. From maintaining buildings and grounds for the Calmar Corporation in Lee's Summit where he retired after 22 years, to owning and driving semi-trucks as an operator, from working at Stevenson's to being an electrician - Jim's work ethic and skills shone through every role he undertook. He was not just a man of skill but also of knowledge and continuous learning. In his personal life, Jim was known for his captivating personality - witty, ornery, and always the life of the party. His love for entertainment extended to all those around him; he never knew a stranger and had a special way of making everyone feel at ease. His zest for life was contagious, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Among his hobbies and interests were activities that brought him joy and adrenaline - sailboating, water skiing, skydiving, and motorcycle riding were just some of the adventures he cherished. Additionally, Jim found fulfillment in yard work, especially mowing the yard with care. Volunteer work was another passion of his, reflecting his generous spirit and selflessness. One of Jim's proudest accomplishments was his active involvement in the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA). He dedicated himself to spreading the word of God while hitting the open road with his wife Sharon by his side. Together they traveled extensively and volunteered for various causes - from offering electrical expertise to churches in need to assisting communities affected by natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina.
Jim's passing was preceded by his parents; George Woodson and Lena Mae (Miles) Combs, his daughter; Angelique Bingman, and his nephew; Bill Kelley. His legacy continues on through his best friend and wife of 51 beautiful years; Sharon Combs, his children; Nerissa Combs and Darren Woodson Combs (Rachel), his grandchildren; Dakota Woodson Combs and Paydon Lee Combs; his sister; Patricia Kelley, 3 nieces, and many, many cousins.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of kindness, service, and genuine connection. While we mourn his loss deeply, we also celebrate a life well-lived - one that touched countless hearts with its warmth and compassion.
