Michael Dean Jeffries died Aug. 4, 2011. Services will be 2 pm, Tuesday, Aug. 9 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, MO 64055; interment at Six Mile Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Buckner Branch of the Community Services League, 1001 S. Sibley St., Buckner, MO 64016.
Mike is survived by his wife of forty-one years, Fran Jeffries; daughter Stephanie Hanna and husband Ryan; his two granddaughters, Madeline and Megan, who were the light of his life and brought him such joy; and his two brothers Rick Jeffries and Jerry Jeffries.
Mike was born Oct. 1, 1950 to Luther “Cork” and Nona Jeffries. Mike was the oldest of three children. He started his career as a union Ironworker on a permit at the age of fifteen and has been a Journeyman Ironworker since 1975. He helped shape the city skyline and later became a teacher at the Local #10 Apprenticeship where he taught the next generation of Ironworkers how to change that skyline.
Mike is the former Mayor of the City of Buckner and for many years, was actively involved with local government and served as a Democratic Committeeman for the Fort Osage Township. He enjoyed all sports, especially baseball, and took great pleasure coaching youth athletics.
Mike’s extraordinary sense of humor and love for his friends and family are the legacies that will live in the hearts of many as well as his motto - “It is what it is.”
