Edna Harriett (Marshall) Jennings, passed away June 30, 2013. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at 2:00 pm, at Cornerstone Community of Christ, 1316 S Osage St., Independence, MO 64055.
She was born in Butler County, KS on December 21, 1911; one of ten children of Tom and Bertha Marshall. She was raised on their farm near El Dorado, KS.
Edna loved to play basketball and played on her high school varsity team all four years. After high school she played for a local industrial team in southeast Kansas. Through that experience she met the man who was to become her husband. Ralston F. Jennings and Edna were married June 6, 1937. They lived in Wichita, KS until 1982 when they moved to Independence, MO where their son and daughter already lived. Ralston and Edna had a long and happy life together. Ralston preceded Edna in death on June 4, 2007.
After graduating from high school Edna got a Normal Training Certificate and taught in rural schools for seven years. After she was married she taught in Wichita public schools for twenty-one years. While teaching she worked to earn her Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education. She was proud of her teaching career and was named “Outstanding Teacher” in Who’s Who in Education.
Through the years Edna retained her love of sports and enjoyed watching golf, basketball and baseball on TV – especially KU and the Royals. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed collecting rocks from all over. She was a member of the Community of Christ.
Edna is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Dr. Ronald and Anna Jennings; daughter and son-in-law Mary and Larry Clark; four grandsons and their spouses: Steve Gunlock; Brad and Mary Teresa Jennings; Jonathan and Soraya Jennings; Ryan and Annie Jennings; two step-granddaughters; nineteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and her youngest brother Dr. Robert L. Marshall of Warrensburg, MO.
Edna was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
