Jessie “Al” Alvin Peters, 94, of Independence, MO passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, March 9. Al was married to Janis (Reese) for 71 years.
Al was born December 9, 1930, to John and Georgia Peters in Independence, MO. He was the youngest of 6 brothers. They were all raised in the church which led to Al being baptized in February of 1940 at Maywood Baptist Church. He was a lifelong member of the church, tithing like his parents taught him and became a Deacon. In his younger years, he was part of an octet called the Maywood Gospel Messengers, which sang at nearby revivals. In later years, he continued to love singing with his brothers, with quartets, with the choir, and with his daughters and other family members. He was also involved in various roles in Sunday School in Adults 5 and 6, and his last years of teaching were with 4th grade boys.
Al married Janis in 1953, and they quickly left for his Army service in Germany, where they welcomed their first born, Chris Lyn. Al and Janis were very family oriented, him being the youngest of six and her the youngest of eight. Adding two more daughters to the mix, Karen Sue and Carla Jo, they were always surrounded by family and traveled in their station wagons through the years to see the U.S. and to visit relatives all over the country.
He was a sports fan and loved watching the Royals and Chiefs play. He coached his daughters in softball and basketball in the church league and loved to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events when Katie, Matt, and Jessica were growing up.
Al is preceded in death by his parents John Henry and Georgia Peters, his 5 older brothers Vic (Alice), Gene (Gloria), Bob (Thelma), Bill, and Glenn (Margaret) and his daughter Chris Mitchell. He is survived by his wife Janis, daughters Karen Bromley of Blue Springs, Carla (Charles) Johnson of Fort Worth, TX, sister-in-law Alice Cotton, grandchildren Katie Bromley, Matt (Mackenzie) Bromley, and Jessica Bartels, great grandchildren Maeve and Finn, and a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
