Jim Pointer

February 17, 1966 — December 21, 2023

Kansas City

James “Jim” Frasher Pointer, passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2023 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by those who loved him.

He was born February 17, 1966 in Richmond, MO, as the first child of Linda and James R. Pointer. He grew up not far away in Independence and Kearney and graduated from Kearney High School. He attended both the University of Missouri-Columbia and Columbia College before his great love of country called him to serve as Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps in Operation Desert Storm.

Jim met the love of his life, Sherry, after he returned from overseas to work at a software company in Columbia, MO. He was wearing his cherished orange Converse high tops and it was love at first sight. After moving to Kansas City, they embarked on a life together of restoring numerous old Victorian houses. He could fix anything and any excuse to buy a new power tool would make him smile. Jim was a quiet and private person and, when he wasn’t covered in sawdust, he loved traveling, listening to 80’s music, reading sci-fi, anything related to tinkering with classic cars, and smoking everyone at trivia games.

Jim is survived by his loving companion of 29 years, Sherry Callahan of Kansas City, Missouri; his mother, Linda Pointer Cheek and her husband, Jim Cheek of Grain Valley, Missouri; his younger brother, Matthew Pointer  and his wife, Danita Pointer, of Independence, Missouri; his nephew, Connor Pointer; his niece, Dominique Echols; his beloved canine companions, Dex and Lilah; his 1966 Ford F-250; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his father and namesake, James Pointer.

To honor Jim’s life, a memorial service and visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m., Wednesday, January 3rd at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 East 39th St S in Independence, MO. We would love for all who knew Jim to come together and share stories of his remarkable life. He was a casual man so comfortable attire is acceptable. We know he would appreciate a splash of orange, his favorite color.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, a veterans’ charity to which Jim was a long-time donor, or The American Cancer Society.
