Gerald Johansen

Gerald Francis Johansen, 85, passed away on December 2, 2016.

A visitation will be from 1-2:30pm, with service to follow at 2:30pm, both Tuesday, Dec. 6 at Speaks Buckner Chapel, 300 Adams St. Burial will follow the service at Buckner Hill Cemetery.

Gerald was born on Nov. 4, 1931, in Nunda, SD, to Ernest H. and Velma M. Johansen. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army from 1952 – 1954. He was honorably discharged, and moved to Indianapolis, IN, where he obtained his Associates of Applied Science in Architectural Drafting from Wayne Technical Institute. He moved to the Kansas City area after school; he worked briefly for a lumber company, then was offered employment with Larkin and Associates, and he retired as a draftsman after 33 years.

On Dec. 19, 1964, Gerald married Norma Jean Glass, and became the proud father of four wonderful children. He was a master gardener – he could often be found in the garden with dirt on his hands and a smile on his face. He also enjoyed fishing, square dancing, and just spending time with his family. He was a longtime member of the VFW Post #21 in Independence.

Gerald was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean; children, Michael Johansen, Debra Rich, and Marsha Billuris; grandson, Jeffery Billuris; and siblings, Orville Johansen and Margaret Kouri.

He is survived by his daughter, Carla Zackula (husband, Kris); 7 grandchildren, Tiana Musselman (husband, Chad), Jeremy Zackula, Erin Rich (wife, Lindsay), Stacy Rich, Eric Johansen, Melissa Wells (husband, Alex), and Jennifer Keeran (husband, Chad); and 6 great-grandchildren.
