John Joseph Johnson, Jr.

June 1, 1958 — August 9, 2023

Independence

“Joe” John Joseph Johnson, Jr. was a man who embodied hard work, and a deep love for his family. Joe’s journey began on June 1st, 1958, in Independence, Missouri, where he was born to his beloved parents John Joseph Johnson Sr. and Marcia Jean (Leibrecht) Johnson Burks.

Shortly after graduating from Fort Osage High School in 1976, Joe met a young lady named Teresa Stubbs. That day would forever change his life. Joe and Teresa married on June 3, 1978. Later in 1981, they went on to have their first and only child, Tara.

Joe's blue collar work ethic and dedication to his craft stood as a testament to his character. For many years, he worked as a binder for Life Touch until his well-deserved retirement in 2014.

Joe had a passion for barbecuing and loved nothing more than firing up the grill. Joe’s T-bone steaks, beef ribs, au gratin potatoes, and cowboy potatoes were legendary. Few things brought him greater pleasure than cracking open a cold beer while swapping stories and opinions (which were never wrong) with family and friends.

In retirement, Joe purchased an RV to travel with his beloved wife, Teresa. They frequented Crow's Creek, where they created cherished memories together. Camping brought them closer to nature and allowed them time to reconnect with each other.

Sports played a significant role in Joe's life. He was an avid supporter of the K.C. Chiefs! Joe enjoyed yearly super bowl parties with close friends. Wrestling or “Sport Entertainment” as he called it, also held a special place in his heart as these were cherished memories with his daughter.

On August 9th, 2023, surrounded by loved ones in Independence, Missouri, Joe's journey came to an end. He fought valiantly against throat cancer for over three years, demonstrating incredible strength, resilience, and stubbornness. Towards the end, Joe faced the additional challenge of brain cancer with unwavering determination.

Joe's departure has left a void in the lives of his cherished family and friends. His loving wife Teresa of 45 years remains at the center of his legacy, forever grateful for their shared journey. He is also survived by his daughter Tara (Shea) Sturtevant, who will carry her father's spirit with her always. Joe's grandchildren, Braiden Sturtevant and Brooklin Sturtevant, were truly blessed to have such a loving and caring Papa.

In addition to his immediate family, Joe leaves behind two devoted sisters: Cindy Dollard and Mindy Cammack.

Joe’s memory will be cherished by everyone fortunate enough to have broken past his rough exterior and get to know his true spirit. He will be remembered as a hardworking individual who found joy in simplicity and creating lasting memories.

As we bid farewell to Joe, let us celebrate the life he lived with open hearts and gratitude.
