John Paul Lorance, 84, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on April 11, 2025. Born on April 24, 1940, in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, John was the youngest of twin sons to Merle A. Lorance and Ruby Lester.
He graduated from William Chrisman High School in Independence, MO, in 1958. John enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1958 and received an honorable discharge in 1962. He then returned to Independence, MO, to begin his civilian life.
He worked for General Mills in Kansas City, MO, from 1962 to 1977. That year, he began a new chapter as an electrician and robotics specialist with General Motors. In the 1990s, he transferred from the Kansas City plant to the Reno, NV, parts plant. He later continued his career at the GM Saturn facility in Columbia, TN, retiring in 2001.
John married his first wife, Betty Rodgers, on April 4, 1959, in the chapel at the U.S. Air Force Base in Greenville, MS. Together they welcomed two children: John Jr. and Tammy Lorance Akers.
John was charismatic, full of life, and had a gift for making every room he entered feel warmer and more joyful. His vibrant personality left a lasting impression, especially on children, who were drawn to his playful spirit, generous heart, and genuine attention. He valued family above all, including his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his family and friends, he had a passion for flying small aircraft and participating in classic car shows, including the Downtown Blue Springs Car Cruise.
He is survived by his loving wife, Norma Lorance; his daughter, Tammy Lorance Akers; his grandsons, Jared P. Lorance and Trevor D. Lorance; his granddaughter, Erica (Lorance) Rash; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Janice Monley; stepsons, Rick Dilks and David Dilks and many nieces and nephews who will fondly remember his humor, warmth, and enduring love.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Betty, his son John Jr., his grandson William “Cody” Akers, and his siblings Shirley Lorance Stanford and James D. Lorance.
