Christopher A. Johns, 33, Kansas City MO, died Sunday, June 12, 2005, as the result of an automobile accident. Services will be 10:00 am Wednesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence MO; burial in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 5-9:00 pm Tuesday at the Chapel. The family suggests contributions to the Chris Johns Memorial Fund, c/o Kansas City MO Police Credit Union, 2800 E. 14th St., Kansas City MO, 64127. Chris was born December 7, 1971, in Winter Park, FL, and was a 1990 graduate of Fort Osage High School. He graduated from Longview Community College and then from Columbia College with a BA in Criminal Justice before entering and graduating from the Kansas City Police Regional Academy in 1997. He was currently employed as a detective in the Violent Crimes Division Juvenile Unit and investigated crimes against children. His employment before becoming a police officer was at the Independence Regional Health Center in radiology and at the Jackson County Jail. Chris had been a patrol officer for five years before becoming a detective and had received numerous awards and commendations for his work in the department, including 3 Certificates of Commendation and 2 KMBZ9/Metro Chief�s Awards. He attended the Atherton RLDS church in Atherton, MO. As a young man he had been involved in Boy Scouts, played soccer and baseball, and in later years played guitar with his band, Relentless. He was an avid fisherman, loved to camp and run with his dog, Simon. Chris is survived by the love of his life, daughter Haley Renee; his mother Lisa Hotchkin and step-father Gary, Odessa MO; father Alan C. Johns, and his companion Anne Gunderson, Prattyville, AL; 2 brothers, Michael Simmons and Daniel Torsch, Kansas City MO; maternal grandfather Henry Knapp, Deland FL; paternal grandmother Elinor Johns, Binghamton, NY; aunts and uncles David Knapp and wife Deb, Sharon Aswad and husband Mike, both of Binghamton NY, Laurie Knapp, Indianapolis, IN, Cynthia Cahill and husband Jim, Binghampton NY, and Marcia Johns, Merritt Island, FL; a nephew, Ethan Simmons; and several cousins. He is also survived by 2 step-brothers, Christopher and Patrick Hotchkin, Odessa MO, and step-sister Jennifer Hotchkin, Colorado Springs, CO. Chris was preceded in death by maternal grandmother Florence Knapp and paternal grandfather Robert Johns. Chris had many friends outside the department, as well as many friends within, and will be missed by all who knew him.
