Velma Lorene Jones, formerly of Independence, MO, passed away peacefully in her home Thursday, September, 24th 2020. She was 97 years young.A visitation will be held 9:00 am to 10:00am with the service to follow at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October, 2nd. at Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 E 39th St. Independence, MO. Velma was born on October 24th 1922, to Edgar E. and Lois (Hamilton) Hutchison in Fortuna MO. She eventually became the oldest daughter of 10 children, 4 older brothers, 2 younger brothers 3 younger sisters. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class and was a trailblazer for Title IX as she was among the first high school girl’s basketball team. Velma went on to marry her beloved husband of 67 years, Teddy Charles Jones on April 12, 1941. They spent many happy years traveling and working in their yard together. Velma became a Nurse when she and Ted moved to Independence. She later worked at and retired from Rice Coats in Kansas City MO. She is survived by her 3 children: Ted “Joe” Jones, and wife Diane of Newbury New Hampshire, Ed Jones and wife Carolyn of Lebanon, Ohio; and Jacquelyn and husband David Bogdan of Lenexa KS; 10 grandchildren;
9 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grand children.
