Walter Allen Kennon, 76 of Independence, MO passed away at home on Wednesday, December 24, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. He will be remembered and treasured as a generous and caring husband and father. Dogs were always an important part of his life. Walt enjoyed walking, reading, sports and his Tuesday and Friday coffee club; but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Walt was born July 19, 1938 in Sedalia, MO to Lloyd and Mary Kennon. He graduated from Smith Cotton High School in Sedalia and then went on to Central Missouri State University, where he obtained his undergraduate degree. Later he earned a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He also completed a specialist’s degree in educational administration from UMKC. He began his career as a teacher in Maryland Heights, MO. Then went to work for Missouri Job Service as an Employment Service Counselor from 1964-68. Afterward, he joined the Fort Osage School District as a counselor in the Area Vocational-Technical School. He served in that capacity from 1968 to 1975. He became that school’s Director in 1975 and remained in that position until he retired in 1995. In 1996 he began working part-time at the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum in Visitor Services. He later took a position as the Coordinator of the Tech Prep Consortium. He became a volunteer at the National Frontier Trails Museum and the Chicago & Alton Depot. He was a member of the American Vocational Association, the Missouri Vocational Association, the Kiwanis Club, and Country Meadows Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Marlene of the home, a son, Chad (Emily), a daughter Tris (Richard), a granddaughter Reese, several nephews and cousins, and a sister-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Sid. Visitation will be from 9-11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 31, 2014 with the services at 11:00 a.m., at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Great Plains SPCA or Wayside Waifs in lieu of flowers.
