Hugh W. King, 90, Independence, MO departed April 3, 2006 at his home. Services will be 2 pm, Thursday, April 6, 2006 at Carson-Speaks Chapel; interment at Mt. Washington Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Kansas City Hospice. Hugh was born Aug. 16, 1915 to Elmer & Erma (Browning) King, in Lebanon, MO. He was the youngest of five children. His brothers, Floyd & Harry; his sisters, Sarah & Mable; and son Paul have preceded Hugh in death. He served in WWII from Feb. 14, 1942 through Oct. 12, 1945 as a member of the 35th Division and participated in all five major campaigns in Europe. He was awarded five Bronze Stars (one for each campaign), the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Star medal, the Purple Heart, and the French Medal of Honor. He was a member of American Legion Post #21, the VFW and Disabled American Veterans. He was a Jackson County resident for 51 years. Hugh was a Deacon Emeritus at Noland Road Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. He owned and operated his own fleet of trucks and worked with Rock Acres Quarry in Independence for over 35 years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lucile King, of the home; son Danny King and wife Betty, Blue Springs, MO; daughters June Humphrey and husband Barney, Overland Park KS; Jane Thoeni, Independence, MO; daughter-in-law Debbie King, Independence; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
