Victoria Gamutan King, 67, passed away on April 4, 2020, in Independence, MO.
Victoria was born on November 2, 1952, in Laguna Rizal, Philippines, the daughter of and Fresco Gamutan and Julia Conservado. There, she worked as a seamstress and married her first husband - to this union were born five children. After his passing, she began corresponding with a U.S. Navy sailor named James “Jim” King. Over the course of a five-year courtship and numerous letters mailed back and forth, they were finally married on November 28, 1987, in Anaheim, CA. To their union was born a son. While Jim was still active in the Navy, they lived in Anaheim, Long Beach, and San Diego before ultimately moving to Independence.
Victoria had experienced several years of health issues, but she was very determined to maintain an active life. She enjoyed visiting some of her family in Joplin when she could, and got to watch her son graduate from boot camp and go on to serve actively in the U.S. Navy. She was poised and graceful, but also a little ball of fire! She loved knitting, needlepoint, fishing, and playing keno and the slot machines at the casino… cha-ching! Although she did not have an extensive formal education, she spoke several languages such as Filipino, Spanish, and Visayan. She also learned to repair things around the house and was particularly creative in the kitchen. She was proud to make the types of food she enjoyed in her youth, but also loved experimenting with American food… by happy accident, she came up with “potato lasagna” and it became a family favorite. She was known as “Nanay” to her children, grandchildren, and their friends, for she was always welcoming, loving, and fun to be near.
She is survived by her “Gimbo” of nearly 33 years, Jim King, of the home; six children: Marivi “Vic” Haygood of the home, Maricon “Con-Con” Dionisio of the Philippines, Marita Dionisio of the Philippines, Marian Dionisio of the Philippines, Michael Gamutan of the Philippines, and James King (Tony) of Norfolk, VA; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Andrea Vita, Zenaida Kirby, and Emy Gamutan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Lando, and her favorite grandpa, Anda.
Victoria will be laid to rest in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Her family suggests that contributions be made to the American Heart Association in her memory.
