Elmer George Kuhn, 89 of Lee’s Summit, passed away on July 17, 2013 at John Knox Care Center. Services will be at 11 am Tuesday, July 23, 2013, St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 700 NE Chipman Rd, Lee’s Summit, MO 64063. Visitation will be from 10 – 11 am Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at the church. Elmer was born on June 8, 1924, Independence the son of Elmer and Ella Kuhn, both of whom preceded him in death. Elmer graduated from William Chrisman High School. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force until February 16, 1946. After his time in the Air Force he attended William Jewell College where he met the love of his life Dorothy Ann. They were married on May 29, 1948 and enjoyed nearly 65 years together before her passing on February 15, 2013. Out of college he worked for Butler Manufacturing Co. in the business office and then for the Jackson County Title Co. Culminating a successful and well respected professional life he retired as President of Blue Valley Federal Saving and Loan. He was very knowledgeable about the real estate market and did many appraisals for the Veterans Administration. He was appointed and served on the Jackson County Board of Equalization for several terms. He was involved in numerous activities such as: Independence Junior Chamber of Commerce, Independence Kiwanis Club, Missouri Society of Real Estate Appraisers and Bingham Waggoner Historical Society Board. He was an Independence Square business owner and very active in the Independence Square Development for several decades. Elmer was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church and most recently St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He treasured time spent with his family and the friendships made thru college, civic and church organizations and the couples bridge groups. He is survived by two daughters, Marti Schroeder and husband Charlie, Parker, CO; and Cindy Niemann, Lee’s Summit; one brother, James P. Kuhn and his wife Dorothy, Independence; four grandchildren, Leah Schroeder, Parker, CO; Matt Schroeder, Myrtle Beach SC; Kristi Niemann Shepard and husband Steve, Houston, TX; and Julie Niemann Larson and husband Brian, Overland Park, KS; two-great grandchildren, Owen and Riley Shepard; and five nieces and nephews.
