Aileen Smith, 92, of Sun City, Arizona, passed away December 23, 2003. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 27, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Aileen moved to Sun City 19 years ago with her late husband, Allyn Laybourn, who preceded her in death last summer. She was a member of the Sun City Christian Church, a former member of the First Christian Church in Independence, and the Country Club Christian Church in Kansas City. Aileen was a graduate of the University of Missouri at Kansas City where she earned a masters degree in education and was a devoted teacher and educator. She began her teaching career in a rural school district and retired as principal of the J.C. Nichols elementary school in Kansas City. She was married until his death, to Tom A. Smith, a teacher and businessman in Independence, who was the father of their two sons. She is survived by her son, Tom A. Smith Jr. and wife, Janet; Michael Dale Smith and wife Chau; eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and a loving extended family. A Memorial Service has also been planned in Sun City, Arizona where she made her home. It is scheduled for January 3, 2004, 10:00 a.m. at the Forum Center at Desert Harbor.
