Richard W. Leach, 90, of Independence, MO, passed away March 21, 2014. Graveside Services with full Military Honors will be 10:00 am Wednesday, March 26, at Mt. Washington Cemetery in Independence. Richard was born on May 5, 1923, to Justin and Jewel (Coppick) Leach in Independence, MO. He attended William Chrisman High School before joining the Navy in 1942. Richard served during WWII, earning a Purple Heart from injuries sustained during the Battle of Zamar and Leyte Gulf. He was also the recipient of the Victory Medal, American Area, Philippine Liberation (1Star), and the Asiatic-Pacific (3Stars). Richard was married to Nellie (Reed) Leach in 1971. Richard and Nellie loved to travel around the United States, fishing, and playing with his metal detector. Survivors include; wife, Nellie Leach; daughter, Sue Johnson; sons, James and Gilbert Leach; and step-son Billy Jack Shipman. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, sons, Rick, Gary, Steve Leach, and step-son Bobbie Shipman.
