Elsie Romayne Leake passed away quietly on Tuesday, May 23, 2018 at her residence located in Independence, Missouri. She was devoted to her family and friends during her 99 years. Romayne was a proud mother of three, grandmother of seven, great-grandmother of 15, and great-great grandmother of 13 children. She was born October 31, 1918 in Newburg, Missouri and attended school in the local community. Romayne was the daughter of Ezra Issac Peck and Elsie Edith Rook. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Leake, her son Louis Carl “Butch” Leake, two brothers, Carl and Roy, and sister, Dora Alta Iona DeShurley.
Romayne was married in a small church ceremony in Rolla, Missouri and resided in Newburg, Missouri. Her life-long dedication and passion was to her three children and community. Romayne had an undeniable zest for life and an unquenchable thirst for learning. Romayne was a novice pianist and artist. She relocated to Rolla, Missouri and worked as a dedicated Senior Companion for over 25 years. Romayne also worked for the Department of the Navy and the Rolla Daily News for many dynamic years. She remained a long time member of the Newburg, Missouri Christian Church and a member of the church choir. Romayne is survived by her two daughters, Louwana Leake, and Heidi Updike; Son-in-law, Steven; four grandsons Douglas Rolufs, DaVere Rolufs, Lucky Leake, and Russell Leake; three granddaughters, Carlena Leake, DeLaine Rolufs, and Meagan Blackford. Romayne lived a long and rich life with much love and support from family and friends. Friends are invited to visitation and memorial service for Romayne. Visitation is Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 9 a.m. at Speaks Funeral Home (39th Street) in Independence, Missouri with the memorial service at 10 a.m. Romayne will be laid to rest in the family plot in the Rolla, Missouri Cemetery.
