Delbert J. Lewis, 94, of Independence, passed away Saturday, March 2nd, 2019. A visitation will be held on Monday March 11th from 6-8:00pm with a funeral service at 10:00am, Tuesday, March 12th, both at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E 39th St., Independence, MO 64055.
Delbert was born on June 5, 1924, in Atherton, MO to William J. and Pearl (Roach) Lewis. He joined the United States Coast Guard, serving as a merchant marine during WWII. On his birthday, in 1951, Delbert married his beloved wife of almost 68 years, Goldie Rogers. They spent their lives in Jackson County, MO raising a family and were involved in the community. Delbert worked as an iron worker until 1972 and remained an active union member of Local #10 the remainder of his life. Delbert or “Tuffy”, was very proud of his Lewis roots. His family members were involved in the building of the first Jackson County courthouse and he is a direct descendant of the Nathaniel Lewis, a Revolutionary War veteran. He enjoyed reading, and spending time outdoors, but most of all loved his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Goldie; his grandson, John Julian and granddaughter, Lorri Trotter; great-grandchildren, Logan, Lukas, Makenna, Mason, and Macoy; great, great-grandchildren, Abigail and Thea; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Virgil Julian; and his siblings, Lorena, Emil, Emmert, Neithel, Cecil, Muriel, Pearl, Hughnell, and Martha.
