William Liddle Jr

February 5, 1923 — September 6, 2016

William (Bill) F. Liddle, Jr., passed away September 6, 2016 at age 93.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., from 1-2:00 p.m., with funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel. He will be laid to rest with military honors in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Bill was born on Feb. 5, 1923 to William and Nellie (Schulenberg) Liddle in Independence, MO. He attended William Chrisman High School and graduated in 1940. In 1943 he married Betty Smith and they had two children, Larry and Sheryl. They were married for 64 years before Betty’s death in 2007. As a part of the Greatest Generation, Bill served his country during World War II in the US Army Signal Corp in the Philippines. He also served during the Korean War.

Bill spent his career working with the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and retired in 1978 after 37 years. He was a member of the American Legion Tirey J. Ford Post 21 in Independence for over 70 years and worked tirelessly as a Legion member. He served as Commander of Post 21, Fifth District Commander and Missouri Department Commander. For many years he worked with the Missouri Boys State. He was also a member of the VFW. He was a charter member of the Lee’s Summit Optimist Club.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Betty and son, Larry, his parents, his three sisters, Mary Snow, Lucille Crenshaw and Betty Layden and one brother, Don. He is survived by his daughter, Sheryl, daughter-in-law, Marilyn, two grandchildren and five great-grand children, as well as nieces and nephews.

Other than his time in the Armed Services, Bill lived his entire life in Independence. He was Chairman of the Harry S Truman Pilgrimage and part of the Truman Historical Society; worked as a volunteer for Independence Tourism; was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and helped raise funds for the Memorial Building in Independence. He also led a successful petition drive in Jackson County to bring about a referendum on the legislative pension issue. He believed in using his right as a citizen to help govern and make his state a better place to live.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the Villages of Jackson Creek Memory Care for the loving care they provided Bill during this past year and to Ascend Hospice for their care during his last days. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Bill’s memory be made to the Salvation Army.
