John Lucas, Jr., 91, of Sugar Creek passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at Carmel Hills Living Center, Indep. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am, Thursday, July 18, 2013 at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church, 11213 Chicago Avenue, Sugar Creek, MO 64054. Visitation will be from 9:30 – 11 am, on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at the church. Entombment will be in Mound Grove Mausoleum. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Cyril’s Catholic Church. John was born in 1922, in Sugar Creek, the son of John and Eva (Patrick) Lucas. He is survived by the love of his life of 64 years, Dorothy, of the home in Sugar Creek; two sons, Michael Lucas and his wife Rhonda, Harrisonville; and Mark Lucas and his wife Ann, Independence; one daughter Christy Swoll and her husband Jim, Denver, CO; five grandchildren, Jessica Culpepper, Jennifer, Tyler, Nikki and Callie Lucas; three sisters, Mary Anderson, Helen Kent, and Theresa Calovich; and several nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Anne.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp, Co 780 in Melvern, Iowa for one year in 1939 and enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in August, 1940. During his six years of service he was involved in escorting many convoys of supplies and troop ships in the North Atlantic, Pacific and Alaska Peninsula during WWII. He was honorably discharged on August 3, 1946. After 35 years of employment, he retired from BP Amoco in 1981. John spent many years enjoying fishing, hunting, gardening and casino buffets. John will be missed by all that knew and loved him.
