Lysle Roy Weeks, 85, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025, at John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Lysle was born June 17, 1939 to Philip K. and Julia Lenore Brown Weeks in Independence, Mo. He was raised in Independence and graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1957. Lysle had a passion for education. He graduated from Carleton College with a BA in Sociology in 1961 and continued his education by completing a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Missouri Kansas City.

Lysle was an idealistic man, passionate about helping the community and believing in the good in all people. In his professional life, he served in various roles at UMKC and Longview Community College before joining the family business, Weeks Apartments, as a managing partner.

Lysle is best known for his leadership within the community, and he gave his life in service to the people of his hometown. He served in a variety of civic roles, including as Independence City Councilman from 1988-1992. He led the creation of significant community organizations, including the creation of the LEAD training program for the Independence Chamber of Commerce and the Independence Youth Friends mentorship program. In retirement, he was active as a driver for Meals on Wheels, delivering meals three or more days a week. His proudest achievement was leading the task force that resulted in the creation of Hope House. Lysle remained involved with Hope House throughout his life to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence. 

Lysle is preceded in death by his wife Carolyn Cunningham Slayton and his parents. He leaves behind his daughter Gabrielle Weeks (Coby Skye), his sisters Phylis Crisp (Stuart Willis) and Marcy Brown (Mitch), niece Jaime Simpson (David) and nephews Philip Brown (Liz) and Ryan Crisp (Melissa), stepdaughters Cyd Slayton (Madeleine McDonough), Tamra Rembolt (Jay) and Lisa Slayton, and countless loving friends and family.

Services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at 2:30 PM at Speaks Suburban Chapel, with visitation preceding at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hope House.
