William Lee Main

March 8, 1934 — June 23, 2014

William Lee “Bill” Main, 80, passed away at home after a long illness on June 23, 2014. He was born March 8, 1934 to Fred L. and Helen Main. He leaves behind a son, John and wife Kristy of Independence; daughter Cynthia Henshaw of Independence; granddaughter Lyndsey Padget, grandsons Ryan Main and Jeremy Henshaw and great granddaughters Allison Padget and Vivienne Padget. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Agnes; son, Donald Lee Main; and son-in-law, David Henshaw.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Independence and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Independence. Bill attended school at St. Mary’s before graduating from William Chrisman High School. He loved baseball and played on teams at St. Mary’s and he was an avid Royals fan. He entered the Army after high school and after attending basic training was stationed for 18 months at Schofield Barracks in Oahu, Hawaii. He and Agnes were married in Oahu and lived there until his discharge from active duty. Bill stayed on in the Army reserves for several more years and found work at Standard Oil in Sugar Creek and later with Midwest Pre-coat Asphalt where he worked driving an oil distributor and truck driver for 40 years. He was a member of the Teamsters Union #541.

After his retirement, Bill and Agnes loved playing video poker and slots at casino’s here in Kansas City and driving to casino’s in Colorado and Nevada. They loved animals and had many pet dogs and cats. They also loved hunting Morel mushrooms and sharing their finds with family and friends. Before the loss of his wife and his battle with illness, Bill was fun loving, loved to eat and made many friends through the casinos. He will be missed.

A visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Carson-Speaks Chapel; 1501 W. Lexington Ave. Independence, MO 64051. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to First Christian Church in Independence, Mo or Wayside Waifs Animal Rescue in Kansas City, Mo.
