Mary Catherine Marcks, 76, passed away on May 21, 2016. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 26, 2016, at 2pm, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO, 64055. Family will greet friends from 12-2pm Thursday at the chapel. She will be laid to rest in Blue Springs Cemetery.
Mary was born on October 4, 1939, in Blue Springs, MO, to Joseph and Mary (Hufferd) Friend. She later graduated from CMSU with a Master’s degree in Education. She met Donald Marcks while they both were attending college, and they married in 1961. She taught third grade at Robinson Elementary School until 1968, when she and Donald were blessed with a son, Patrick. Mary was a very involved mother, and attended all of her son’s school and sporting events. She also enjoyed planting flowers, singing in the chorale, playing piano, and cooking. She will always be remembered for her special “green rice,” a delicious, but sneaky, way to get Patrick to eat his broccoli.
Mary is survived by her family: son, Patrick Marcks; grandson, Corey Marcks; sister, Mildred Boice-Dahl; brother, Frank Friend (wife, Ann); sister-in-law, Mildred Friend; and nieces and nephews, Charles, Carol, John, Christine, Victor, and Dick.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Donald Marcks; brother, J.C. Friend; brothers-in-law, Willard Boice and Don Dahl; niece, Diana; and nephews, Doug and David.
