Marlene Deaver Cable, Independence, Mo., passed away July 4, 2024, concluding a brief stay at Saint Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, Mo. Marlene was born June 24, 1939, in Leon, Iowa, to Daisy M. and A. Neal Deaver.
She received her degree in dietetics from Iowa State University and practiced as a Registered Dietitian (ADA) at the former Independence Sanitarium and Hospital until retirement. She enjoyed working primarily with new moms, and people with diabetes or cardiac issues. She also enjoyed regularly teaching student nurses and mentoring dietetic interns. A highlight for her was a brief residency in Monrovia, Liberia, where she researched and established a nutrition program for elementary and preschool students.
Throughout her life, she travelled extensively domestically and abroad. In her retirement, Marlene took several trips to central and southeastern Europe. She also participated regularly in her residential community, Hidden Valley Club, and in her church, Community of Christ. Marlene particularly enjoyed her time with friends in the Hidden Valley women’s book club. Her hobbies included sewing, cooking, gardening and spending time with people she cared for.
Her family members include her husband of 62 years, Jim; daughters, Susie Cable (Bret Hurshman) and Karen Case (Terry); grandson, Quinn Hurshman; and sisters, Lynette Wages (Gary) and Janet Deaver-Pack. Her extended family includes many beloved cousins and other relatives.
A visitation will be held from 1-2pm on Friday, July 12th at Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence. Her funeral service will begin at 2pm. A private graveside service will be held Monday, July 15th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Saint Luke’s Hospice House, Kansas City. The family is grateful to the hospice staff for the exceptionally tender care she received in her last days.
