Curtis Joe Martin, age 60, passed away Friday, December 4, 2020. Curtis was born on January 2, 1960, in Carrollton, Missouri.
Curtis graduated from Carrollton High School (‘78) and then attended Graceland University (‘82). He became a kicker for the GU football team, and it was there he earned the nickname “The Toe.” Curtis was a member and riverboat captain of the Graceland Ramblers that toured the country singing, entertaining, and providing public relations for GU. This experience led to meaningful lifelong friendships.
Curtis and Lori (Miller) were married in 1984. He then obtained his law degree at Southern Illinois University (‘89). They moved to Kansas City, and Curtis worked at Black & Veatch for 31 years.
He was active in the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Later he spent time with his sons and was a Scout Master for Troop 264 for ten years. He was a Sachem in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He held the office of Elder in the Community of Christ Church. Curtis was a hunter and cherished the time he spent with his friends at Borr’s Den hunting for deer and turkey in Illinois.
One of his favorite things to do was travel to Colorado with his family. They would enjoy the peace of the Rocky Mountains in Estes Park. He was able to hike Longs Peak on three occasions. He was very active in the lives of his children. When he wasn’t working he could be found coaching baseball and volleyball and photographing all of his children’s activities and events.
Curtis is survived by his wife, Lori (Miller); his children Alex (Rebecca), Kelsi Bennett (Brandon), and Brady; his parents, Norman and Helen Martin of Carrollton; and brother Keith (Temme) of Lee’s Summit.
