Mary Ida Martin, 95, wife of Lewis Harold (Bud) Martin, of Independence, Missouri passed from this life and entered heaven on October 18, 2016, at 7:18 p.m. while surrounded at home by her loving family. A visitation will be held from 12-2:00 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Mary requested cremation and internment will occur later. Mary was born May 27, 1921, in Deepwater, Missouri the oldest child of Harry Forrest Ropp and Nellie Ilene Ropp. She met her husband Lewis Harold Martin in Clinton, Missouri resulting in a loving marriage on December 2, 1938 in Springfield, Missouri that spanned more than 77 years. Upon her husband’s honorable discharge they resided shortly in Kansas City, Missouri until settling in Independence, Missouri in 1946 and remaining there lifelong. She and her husband were early members of Immanuel Baptist Church on 23rd Street in Independence and both served there in many church capacities. She was active in school PTA for more than thirty-one years. Mary loved to quilt creating many masterpieces valued by her family. In 1962 she entered full time employment as the office manager of the TG&Y store in Independence, retiring after twenty years. They then enjoyed 34 years of retirement. Mary is survived by her husband, Harold “Bud” Martin; her four children, Dr. (Lt. Col. retired) Donald D. Martin (Elizabeth) of Blue Springs, Missouri, Lt. Col (retired) Darrell R. Martin (Linda) of Columbia, Missouri, Dr. Barbara N. Martin of Independence, and Patricia E. Simcosky (Mark) of Independence; seven grandchildren, Annette Martin of Independence, Christopher Martin of Blue Springs, Dr. Lisa Martin Hawver of Wildwood, Missouri, Ryan Simcosky of Kansas City, Major Jonathan Martin of Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Matthew Martin of Blue Springs, Missouri and Mary Paige Simcosky of Independence, Missouri; and eight great grandchildren.
