Oran Gilpin Martin, 78, of Independence, MO, passed away, Monday, May 9, 2005 at his residence. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 13, 2005 at the Carson-Speaks Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Washington Forever Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time Friday at the chapel. Oran was born September 11, 1926 in Ashland, MO to Paul and Ivy Pearl (Gilpin) Martin. He grew up in Columbia MO and graduated from Hickman High School in 1944. He worked as a watchmaker and jewelry engraver for the Campus Jewelers. He moved to Independence in 1951 and worked as a over the road truck driver and later for American Paving before working a number of years for Citywide Paving retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia, MO, a life member of the V.F.W. Post 3976 in Independence, MO. and had belonged to The Organ Club. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII having served aboard the USS Wheatland. He was married to Betty Rose Barnes on December 3, 1945, she survives of the home. Other survivors include; 3 daughters, Theresa Simon and her husband Arlynn of Blue Springs, Nancy Townsend and her husband Ronald of Sugar Creek, MO and Patricia Ann McBratney and her husband John of Blue Springs. MO; 2 sisters, Hallie Phillips of Columbia, MO and Wanda Engstrand and her husband Bill of York, PA; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Oran Martin on June 5, 1965 and a sister, Sarah Beaver.
