Ray Gene Martin. 90, of Independence, MO passed away September 2, 2014. Services will be 10:00 am, Friday, September 5, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church of Independence, 400 W. Maple, Independence, MO 64050. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am before the 10:00 am service at the church. Committal services will follow at 2:00 pm at the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City, MO. Ray was born on May 25, 1924 in Butler, MO to James and Laura (Adams) Martin. He moved to Independence in 1944 and worked for Armco Steel for 34 years before retiring in 1978. After his retirement, Ray was recruited as a consultant for the Steel Industry, working in both Mexico and Argentina. Ray was a faithful member of the church for more than 55 years. He enjoyed traveling in his RV with his wife by his side. At heart he was still a farm boy, and remembered his childhood on the farm fondly. Ray is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ora Lee (Wilson) Martin in 2012, a brother, Ralph Martin, and a sister, Rowena McQuitty. He is survived by his son, Michael Martin and wife Jo Lynn, Liberty, MO; daughter Linda Briggs, Mesa, AZ; grandchildren Matthew Player, Katie Briggs, Molly Taylor and husband Jake; great grandchildren Zachary and Jacob Player, Ben, Kate, and Gigi Taylor.
