Mary Elizabeth Hoss

June 16, 1936 — January 25, 2025

Independence, Missouri

Mary Elizabeth Hoss, born on June 16, 1936, in Birmingham, Alabama, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2025, at the University of Health Lakewood Care Center. Her remarkable journey through life left a lasting impact on all who knew her, spanning both her outstanding career and her love of family and friends.

After having 4 children, Mary pursued her passion for healthcare by graduating from the Jenny Lund School of Practical Nursing, earning her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She dedicated over 39 years to geriatric healthcare, working tirelessly for 29 of those years at Golden Living Center in Independence, Missouri. Mary retired in 2009, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and dedication in the field of healthcare.

As a former member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Independence and Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Lee's Summit, she held her faith close to her heart. Mary enjoyed engaging in activities that brought her joy and connection to others. She cherished spending time with her family and friends, immersing herself in books, Bible study, exploring the world through travel, with Italy being a memorable destination. In addition to her travels, she had a fondness for visiting estate and garage sales, trying her luck at various casinos, and playing Bingo. Mary also collected angel figurines and loved cheering for the Chiefs and Royals.

Mary is survived by her three children, Betty Rhodes, Springfield, Mo; Michael D. Hoss, Kansas City, Mo; and Brenda Brown, Olathe, Ks. She was a beloved grandmother to 11 grandchildren and a proud great-grandmother to several great-grandchildren. Her warmth and love will be greatly missed by her two brothers, Leonard D. Patterson and Richard Patterson, both from Alabama, along with extended family who held her dear.

In addition to her many accomplishments, Mary grieved the loss of loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, L.D. and Estelle Patterson, her son, John W. Hoss, who passed in 2020, her brother, Dannie Patterson and his wife Earlene, both passed in 2023, sister-in-law Jane Patterson, who passed in 2020, and her son-in-law, Donald Brown, who also passed in 2023.

Mary will be remembered not only for her contributions to healthcare but also for her vibrant spirit, care and compassion for others, her quick wit, her famous banana (ba-Nanny) pudding, as well as the love she shared with her family and friends.

Visitation will take place January 29, 2025, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Independence, Missouri, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM where family and friends can gather to celebrate her life and share cherished memories.
