Jim was born in Kansas City, MO on September 26, 1928 to Walter and Charlotte (Checucci). He grew up in KC and graduated from Northeast High School in 1945. Jim worked for Sears and Roebuck until he was hired by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company (Now AT&T). He worked for many years as lineman, installer, repairman, central office technician, supervisor, instructor and manager. After 33 years at the telephone company, Jim retired in December of 1983. He met his wife, Marty, of 42 years, at SWBT. They were married on May 15th, 1971. Jim was a man of many hobbies and talents including; fishing, woodworking, reading and photography. He was able to build or fix anything and never met a challenge too daunting or a puzzle he could not solve. He loved living at Lake Lotawana, MO and was elected City Alderman for two terms. He was a life member of the Lake Lotawana Sportman’s Club. When Jim had enough of Missouri winters, he and Marty moved to Venice, FL and then to Rotonda West, FL and lived there for ten years. The memory of the great laugh, the twinkle in his eye, the quirky comment at just the right time and his steadfastness as a husband, father, brother and friend will keep Jim in our hearts and minds forever.
He is survived by wife, Marty; daughters, Sherri Laughlin (David); Pam Bell (Scotty); Teresa Hogan; and Carol Peppers; ten grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by sister, Elsie; brothers, Walter, Frank, Robert, and Jack; and by his son, James S. Mayer. The family would like to thank the truly loving and caring staff at Emeritus of Overland Park. Especially those in the Garden Path Neighborhood and the team at Crossroads Hospice that helped Jim and his family make this final journey.
