Clayton Sanders McCombs, of Independence, MO passed away far too soon on Monday, February 27, 2023. He was 35. An informal celebration of life for family and friends is scheduled for Sunday, March 5th at Hereford House (Independence location), come-and-go style from 2-5 p.m.
Clayton was born on August 26, 1987, in Oklahoma City, OK to Edwin and Sheri (Scheffe) McCombs. After a rambunctious childhood in Oklahoma that included fishing trips with his Dad and one memorable stint raising a pig in FFA, he moved with his family to Missouri during his junior year of high school. Despite what could have been a difficult transition, he studied on his own and passed the GED test on his first try, before going on to obtain his Associate Degree of Applied Science (Automotive Technology) from Longview Community College, educational achievements of which his mother remains extremely proud.
Clay could keep any vehicle running, and loved working on them, especially his own truck, but his love of working with tools and his hands led him to explore new skills in construction. Despite having no formal training, he was self-taught and highly self-motivated, and a little over a year ago, he started Quality Finish L.L.C., his own home repair and remodeling company.
In his free time, he was still tinkering and repairing things like computers, phones, and anything else you can take apart and put back together. He also fancied himself something of a homespun chef, who loved doctoring up a frozen pizza and making his own Ranch dip to eat on everything. Clay loved dogs, especially his own, Drake, who eventually became a dog for the whole family, but still always minded his original owner best.
While he had overcome difficulties in his life, he was determined to be a success, and always striving for a better future. More than anything, he will be remembered by those who knew him for his kind heart, and his loyalty to his family and friends.
Clayton is survived by his parents, Edwin and Sheri McCombs of Independence, MO; his sister, Emily McCombs and his nephew, Nalay Connolly of Brooklyn, NY; his aunt and uncle Don and Virginia McCombs; and aunt Suzanne McCombs of Oklahoma City, OK; his aunt Cindee Stephens of Woodward, OK; his aunt and uncle Greg and Michele Scheffe of Edmond, OK; as well as eight cousins and their families.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents Don and Helen McCombs, and Vernon and Louise Williams; his uncle David Stephens; and cousin Amy Nickels.
