Richard Irving “Dick” McCoy

Richard Irving “Dick” McCoy, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2022, he was 95 years of age.

Dick was born on April 6, 1927, in Kansas City, Kansas. The son of Ross W. and Nancy (Cobb) McCoy, he was one of six siblings. Growing up in Southern Missouri Dick attended his primary and secondary schooling. In September of 1945 he enlisted and joined the Army Air Corps and was primarily stationed in Alaska as Chief Clerk. After returning home Dick continued his education and earned his Bachelor’s from William Jewell, then earning his Masters from Southwestern Baptist then continuing on to earn his Doctorate in Divinity. Dick was in his 3rd year of Seminary when he met Martha “Joyce” Scalf. Joyce became his best friend and love of his life. On October 9, 1953, Dick and Joyce wed and from their union came 3 children. In 1965 Dick and his family moved to Independence, Missouri where he started his ministry at The Gathering, formerly known as Noland Road Baptist. Dick was one of their founding members and he continued with them as minister and member for many years. Dick was a great man of faith with a heart of a servant often doing counseling for others in need. An avid reader and writer, he enjoyed working on his computer. He was a lover of chocolate and coffee, watching the Royals and the Chiefs play. Dick loved to tinker in his garage and was a fixer of all things. He was the best storyteller, gripping his family’s attention with his tales of adventures. Dick was always there for his family, supporting them and his grandchildren at their events and having them over for quality time. He was an amazing man and will be deeply missed.

Dick is survived by his daughters, Sarah (Mark) Pinder, Nancy (Ross) Coker; grandchildren, Jason (Lisa) Pinder, Rachel (Brett) Gessley, Jared Coker, Karla Coker, Leah Coker; great grandchildren, Beckett Pinder, Reid Pinder, Dashiell Pinder, Roderick Gessley; nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Joyce McCoy; his son, Mark McCoy; parents, Ross and Nancy McCoy; and his 5 siblings.

Visitation and Funeral Service will be held at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St, Independence, MO 64055, on Friday, June 24, 2022. Family will greet guest between the hours of 1-2pm with service following directly at 2pm. Dick will be laid to rest following is service at Floral Hills East Memorial Gardens, Lee’s Summit. In lieu of flowers family suggest contributions to be made in Dick’s honor to Alzheimer's Association.
