Edna Freeland McKenzie, 103, passed away on January 1, 2016, in Belton, MO. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016, at 10am, at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Avenue in Independence, MO. Family will receive guests from 9-10am Tuesday at the chapel. Burial will follow the service at Greenwood Cemetery. The family suggests contributions be made to Crossroads Hospice in her memory.
Freeland was born on April 17, 1912 on the family farm in Cabool, MO, to James A. and Elizabeth F. (Scott) Bryant. She graduated from Mountain Grove High School and went on to earn a teacher’s certificate from Southwest MO State University. She began teaching at a school in Gravel Point, MO. She married Herbert McKenzie on June 1, 1935, and to this union were born three sons. They relocated to the Independence area, where they became members of the United Methodist Church, and where Freeland was active in their women’s groups. She was a fourth grade Sunday School teacher, a Cub Scout den mother, an Avon representative, and after retirement, went to work for the IRS. She was an expert gardener and seamstress. She was tough, but she loved her family dearly, and even raised her great-granddaughter when Freeland was into her nineties!
Such an incredible lady will be dearly missed by all who knew her, including her three sons: John, Richard (wife, Cheryl), and Donald (wife, Debbie); grandchildren: Leigh Molt, Kim Hernandez, Jessica Harper, and Sarah Booth; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister, Kathryn Coffman.
Freeland was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, in 1975; and two grandchildren, Scott McKenzie and Dawn McKenzie.
