Gerald R. McLaughlin, of Kansas City and Raytown, MO, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2017, surrounded by family. He was 88 years old.
He was preceded in death by his wife Linda Dyerson McLaughlin, his parents William E. McLaughlin and Charlotte (Burns) McLaughlin, and his brother Jack McLaughlin. He is survived by daughter Lisa and son-in-law Tom Martinez of Blue Springs, MO, son Mike McLaughlin of Topeka, KS, and son Kent and daughter-in-law Toni McLaughlin of Smithville, MO. He leaves behind five grandchildren: Evan Martinez and Shawn and granddaughter-in-law Kimber Martinez, both of Blue Springs, MO, and Kyle, Grant and Grace McLaughlin, Smithville, MO, and seven great-grandchildren: Sophie, William, Amelia, Ireland, River, Armie, and Emery.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy and United States Army. A Rockhurst University alumnus, he worked at Puritan Bennett Corporation for 28 years and retired from Menorah Hospital. As an adult, he was active in youth sports, having co-founded and then served as commissioner of Raytown Little League Basketball. He was instrumental in the development of the Raytown Little League baseball complex. He coached both baseball and basketball. He enjoyed playing semi-pro baseball in the Ban Johnson league. Dad’s gift to all of us was a lifetime of selfless care of his entire family. He dedicated 20 years of his later life to the care of his mother, his aunt, his mother and father-in-law, and his wife. And he was a great dad.
Visitation will be at St. Mark’s Parish in Independence from 10-11 am on Thursday, June 8. A funeral mass will follow at 11:00 am. A graveside service and burial will take place at Floral Hills Cemetery in Lee’s Summit, MO.
