Sarah Frances McLaughlin
Sarah Frances McLaughlin, age 91, Independence, MO, passed away July 2, 2006. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Hugh McLaughlin (1975), a Kansas City attorney and former Grand Master of the State of Missouri Masonic Lodge.
Sarah Frances was born in Clinton, Missouri on August 20, 1914 to Bertha Frances and George W. Hastain, and grew up in Searcy, Arkansas. She was a graduate of Capital City Business College, Little Rock, AR. On Aug. 18, 1934 she married Hugh McLaughlin and moved to Kansas City. The couple had one daughter, Kathleen and eventually settled in Independence, Mo.
During WWII, Sarah served as a secretary at North American Aviation. She also worked as a secretary for Pritchard Engineering; as executive secretary for American Institute of Banking; part time secretary in her husband�s law firm; and as a secretary for the Independence School District.
Sarah and Hugh were active members of Independence Boulevard Christian Church where both served as elders. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a community volunteer, holding leadership roles in the following organizations: Mary Paxton Study Class; Daughters of American Revolution; Daniel Boone Family Association; Eastern Jackson County Bar Association Auxiliary; Independence Association of Educational Secretaries; and Van Horn Chapter of American Field Service and as host parent to two AFS students from Turkey and Germany.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Randall Vest; by two grandsons: Hugh Scott Vest and his wife, Tracy (Yorktown, VA), and David Randall Vest and his wife Julie (Indep.); by three great grandchildren: Delaney (Yorktown,VA) and Alexandra and David Jr. (Indep.); her "AFS daughter� Selma Oztemir Soylemez and family (Turkey); her "AFS grandson� Enis Alpakin and his daughter Sibel (NKC); and by two nieces, Ida Zastrow and Jean Marsh and a nephew, Harold Lee Hastain. Sarah was also preceded in death by her two older brothers, Robert Hastain and Harold Hastain.
Services will be held at Speaks Suburban Chapel on Thursday, July 6, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. prior to the service and also following the service.
