LaVina McMillan, 91, of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away Monday, September 17, 2018. A visitation will be held from 9-10am on Friday, September 21, 2018 at Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 E. 39th St, Independence, MO, 64055. A service will follow at 10am at the chapel. She will be laid to rest with her husband, Frank, at Missouri State Veteran’s Cemetery in Higginsville.
LaVina was born on December 8, 1926 in Buckner, MO to Walter and Pearl (Ames) Armbruster. In 1946 she married Frank A. McMillan. Immediately following high school, she had a passion for teaching. She began a pre-school program in Grain Valley, which the school district later adopted as their Kindergarten program. She went on to UCM, formerly CMSU, to earn a bachelor’s degree. Her teaching career began at Peacedale School in northeast Jackson County, Missouri State School, then eventually she retired from the Blue Springs School District. In her spare time, LaVina enjoyed gardening, feeding birds on her property, and traveling – especially to Hawaii. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
LaVina will be remembered by her sons Frank McMillan and wife Adriana of Lone Jack, MO, and Nicholas R. McMillan; sister Betty McQuerry of Liberty, MO; grandchildren Kelly Feagans (David), Anthony Otero, and Nicholas S. McMillan; great-grandchildren Sonya Begley (Willie), Jacob Feagans (Jackie), Bradley Feagans, and Nikkiana Otero; and great-great grandchildren Alice, Ruby, Oliver, and Asher.
She was prededed in death by her husband, brother, and a sister.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Susan G. Koman Foundation.
