Fred Lee McMullen, 83, of Independence, MO, passed away Thursday, July 22nd 2021. A visitation will be held from 9-10 am on Monday, August 2nd with funeral services to begin at 10 am, both at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W Lexington Ave. Independence, MO. Graveside service will follow at Mt Washington Cemetery.
Fred was born December 23, 1938 in Kansas City, MO to Leon and Katherine McMullen. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1958 and attended college at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, MO. He was also an Eagle Scout and a 32nd Degree Mason. Fred worked hard over the years for many companies including McMullen Plumbing Company, Ford Motor Company, Bendix, Maywood Furniture and the the City of Independence Housing Authority where he retired. He was also a longtime member of the Pacific Heights Congregation of Jehovah’s Witness.
Fred always had an incredible work ethic, a strong faith and the gift of caring for others. He displayed these qualities throughout his life by looking after his baby brother when they were younger, caring for the elderly at his job, spoiling his nieces and nephew growing up and making sure his mom and his wife Kathy were always taken care of. His love for friends and family was a true testament to who he was but his ability to captivate a room with his stories is one thing we will never forget. He met the love of his life, Kathy at a hospital, of all places, and they were married July 6th, 1967. They celebrated 53 wonderful years of marriage before Kathy’s passing last year.
In those 53 years you rarely spotted one without the other. Although Fred did not have children of his own he did have nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors who adored him and enjoyed spending time with him. And who can forget their beloved dog, Taco.
Fred is survived by his brother, Gary McMullen (Janette) of Independence, MO, niece, Tracey McDermott (Brian) of Manasses, VA, niece Heather Mills (Brian) of Lee’s Summit, MO, nephew Shawn McMullen of Independence, MO and eight great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Kathy, his parents and his sister, Shirley Dunn.
We ask that in lieu of flowers you might consider making a donation to the Parkinson’s Foundation in honor of Fred.
