Katherine Joyce "Kathy" Mcmullen

Katherine “Kathy” Joyce McMullen, 83, of Independence, MO, passed away Wednesday, August 5th, 2020. A visitation will be held from 9-10 am on Monday, August 10th with funeral services to begin at 10 am, both at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W Lexington Ave. Independence, MO. Graveside service will follow at Mt Washington Cemetery.

Kathy was born June 6th, 1937 in Lexington, NE to James and Maude (Green) Parks where she was the youngest of twelve children. She graduated from Malta Bend High School and worked downtown for several years before meeting the love of her life, Fred McMullen, in a hospital of all places. Her and Fred were married July 7th, 1967 and celebrated 53 wonderful years of marriage. In those 53 years you rarely spotted one without the other.

Kathy worked for many years for the City of Independence where she retired and was a longtime member of the Pacific Heights Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Although Kathy did not have children of her own she did have several nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors whom she “adopted” over the years who all thought of her as a second mom or grandma.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Fred McMullen, her brother in law, Gary McMullen (Janette), two of her siblings as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister in law, Shirley Dunn and ten of her siblings.
