Anna was born on May 30, 1932, in Kansas City, Missouri. She was the second youngest of six children born to Giocchino (Jack) Accurso and Vicenzia (Jennie) Russo Accurso. Anna had fond memories of growing up in Northeast Kansas City. After having lost her father at the age of twelve, her grandparents were instrumental in helping her young mother raise her and her five siblings. Anna attended Garfield Elementary School and later graduated from Northeast High School in 1949 where she was a proud member of National Honor Society. She made lifelong friends during her time in Northeast Kansas City and continued those friendships through her death. After graduation, Anna worked as an executive assistant for TWA, headquartered in Kansas City, where she enjoyed the benefits of traveling to many cities. On September 27, 1958, she married James Alan McNeil, also of Kansas City and a graduate of Northeast High School, class of 1948. After marrying, the couple lived in Independence where Jim owned and operated Milmack Floor Covering Co. Jim and Anna had an ideal marriage where they enjoyed family, travel to many national and international locations, and an active social life with many friends. Anna was a stay-at-home mom for many years before returning to work for Yellow Freight, and eventually retired from SBSI. Jim and Anna were married 37 years before his death in 1996.
Anna will be remembered by her many friends for her beauty, love of shopping, and dedication to the Catholic faith. She always cherished cooking Sunday dinners for family, getting together with her lifelong friends for lunch, and participating in activities in her community and church. Anna was especially proud of the many accomplishments of her daughters, their husbands, and her grandchildren.
Anna is survived by her daughters, Susan Kathleen Hood (Scott) of Leawood, KS, Allison Anne Steinbeck (Robb) of Lee’s Summit, MO, and beloved grandchildren, Alex Hood (Riley), Addison Hood, Andrew Hood, Caylee Steinbeck, Jack Steinbeck, and great grandson Maxwell Ryan Hood (son of Alex and Riley). Anna also is survived by her brother Vincent Accurso (Maria) of Kansas City, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family also wishes to recognize Anna’s caregiver, Ambria Craven, who provided kindness, love and compassion to Anna and her family during Anna’s final years.
Anna was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, James A. McNeil, parents Jack and Jennie Accurso, and siblings Frances Accurso, Ninfa Accurso, Virginia Accurso Williams, Neva Accurso Nicholson, and nephew Jack S. Accurso.
Her children’s wish is for all who knew her to take time to honor her life, and cherish time with their own family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
