Vernon Ray Means, 79, of Independence, MO, died Thursday, December 27, 2018. Inurnment will be held in the spring in Slater, MO. Vern was born August 29, 1939 in Chamois, MO to John and Hulda (Schwermer) Means. Vern was one of seven siblings. After graduating from Smith Cotton High School, Vern joined the Navy, serving for four years and being honorably discharged. It was on a blind date that Vern met, and later married, Donna DeGroodt in June of 1967. The pair had two sons, Michael and Aaron. Before retirement, Vern worked for Missouri Public Service, later KCP&L, as a maintenance superintendent. He was a longtime member of St. John Lalande Catholic Church. In his leisure time, Vern enjoyed reading, poker, going to Ameristar casino, watching sports and animal channels. Vern is preceded in death by both parents; 2 siblings; and two brothers-in-law. He is survived by his wife Donna Means; sons Michael Means and Aaron Means; sisters Zona Rose and Carol Rice; brothers Rolland Means and John Means; and grandchildren Ella Means, Tanner Means, Jack Means, Rory Means, and Will Means; and several other extended family members.
