Merlyn Edward Grubb, age 87, passed on to eternal life July 7, 2024 at the John Knox Village Care Center. A memorial service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church 14506 E. 39th St. Independence MO 64055 on Tuesday July 16th at 6:00 pm with a visitation at Christ United Methodisr Church at 5:00 pm. Merlyn was born to Ira E. and M. Evelyn Grubb on August 27, 1936 in Humphreys, MO. Merlyn graduated high school from Tipton, MO., where his father was Superintendent of Schools. Merlyn earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from University of Missouri - Columbia. He taught Junior High Science in Moberly, MO., and in the Center School District at Center South and Center North Junior Highs in Kansas City, MO. He then became an Elementary School Principal in the Independence School District serving Oldham Elementary, Blackburn Elementary and Spring Branch Elementary. Merlyn was devoted to the Boy Scouts of America attaining the rank of Medicine Man in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. He spent twenty years accompanying Troop 228 to scout camp in Osceola for 10-day sessions each summer and then twenty more years on staff at camp all summer. He was a Scoutmaster of Troop 228, Camp Director and Recording Medicine Man at H. Roe Bartle Scout Camp. Merlyn’s two sons, Jeffrey and Stephen, and two of his grandsons, Jason and Justin, were active in BSA which made him very proud – each earning the Eagle rank and Mic-O-Say honors. Merlyn was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Evelyn Grubb. He leaves his wife Eleanor “Ellie” N. (Cordon) Grubb, two sons Jeffrey A. (Lori) Grubb, Stephen K. (Melinda) Grubb, three grandsons Trey J. (Keelan) Grubb, Jason A. (Alexis) Grubb, Justin D. Grubb and four great grandchildren Blair M. Grubb, Charlotte E. Grubb, Harvey J. Grubb and Oliver C. Grubb, a brother David L. (Jean) Grubb, and a sister Linda S. Gussman. Merlyn was proficient in computer projects and photography. He enjoyed working on Ancestry projects, traveling, reading, family, and BSA activities. After retiring, he also volunteered in the Youth Friend Program for a time. He was known for his calm, patient demeanor, kindness, leadership and sense of humor.
