Michael Phillip Nesheim

January 3, 1956 — December 11, 2024

Michael Phillip Nesheim, a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully of natural causes at his home in Independence, MO, on December 11, 2024. Born on January 3, 1956, in Des Moines, Iowa, Michael lived a life full of quiet strength, compassion, and intellectual curiosity.

Michael was the son of Lois (Bliven) Nesheim and Phillip Nesheim, who both preceded him in death. Raised in Des Moines, Michael grew up surrounded by love and the close bond of his family. He shared his early years with his sisters Suzanne Eileen Lattimer and Beth Marcielle Hopkins, who, along with his brother-in-law David Hopkins, also preceded him in death. Despite these losses, Michael’s resilience and dedication to his family never wavered.

After graduating high school, Michael answered the call to serve his country by joining the Navy. His time in the service instilled in him a deep sense of duty and discipline, qualities that remained with him throughout his life. Following his service, Michael pursued a career as a house painter, where his meticulous attention to detail and artistic sensibilities shone. After retiring, Michael devoted himself to caring for his loved ones, selflessly tending to his mother during her final years and offering support to his brother-in-law after Beth’s passing.

Michael had a keen and curious mind, which he nourished through his many hobbies. An avid reader and student of history, he particularly enjoyed exploring the depths of Norse mythology and U.S. history. He was a faithful Jeopardy watcher, never missing an opportunity to test his knowledge. He also loved crossword puzzles, painting, and the simple joys of creativity and problem-solving.

Throughout his life, Michael’s home was brightened by the companionship of his cherished pets. Among them were Maximus, a loyal Rottweiler-Lab mix, and Sami, an affectionate orange tabby cat who kept him company in his later years. His love for animals reflected his kind and nurturing spirit.

Michael will be remembered for his quiet generosity, sharp intellect, and steadfast dedication to his family. Though he faced life’s challenges with humility and grace, he left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His memory will be cherished by his surviving family members and friends who were fortunate to share in his journey. He is survived by his nieces Carrie Allison-Rolling, Britta Kallevang, and Wendy Berdine.

In honoring Michael’s life, may we find inspiration in his kindness, perseverance, and love of learning. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in our hearts.
