John George Mika, 86, Sugar Creek, MO passed away Aug. 18, 2013. Services will be 10 am, Thursday, Aug. 22 at Carson-Speaks Chapel. 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64502; interment at Mound Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Wed. at the chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Omega Hospice, 3710 N.E. Carnegie Drive, Lee’s Summit, MO 64064. John was born Jan. 30, 1927 in Cement City, MO near Sugar Creek. He graduated from Northeast High School. He spent thirty-eight and one half years on active and reserve duty in the U.S. Navy and was a company chief in the in the Seabees 40th Battalion. He served in WW II. He also was a member of the “Paint Gang” at the Standard Oil Refinery in Sugar Creek for many years until it closed and he retired in 1982. He was a member of VFW Post #1000 and American Legion Post #21. John loved to hunt rabbits and squirrels and loved to fish for bass and crappie at the family place at Lake Pomme de Terre. John was preceded in death by his wife Merle Maxine Mika in April of this year; son John Lewis Mika, daughter-in-law Janie Mika. He is survived by son Mark K. Mika; daughter JoAnn Davis and husband Dwight, all of Independence, MO; grandchildren Sarah Guardiola and husband Rony; Mark Mika and wife Amy; Diana Baber and husband Chad all of Independence, MO; Laura Mika, Buckner, MO; Dustin Davis, Los Angeles, CA; great-grandchildren Kailey, Aron, Rylan, Jake and Coye.
