Carlton Lee Milby, 84, passed peacefully January 18, 2019, at the home in Independence, MO. Carl was born January 16, 1935 in Kansas City, MO, to Carl Robert and Cleal Amanda Woodrome Milby. He attended Rock Creek Elementary and graduated high school from William Chrisman in 1952. Shortly after, he married and began working at Armco Steel Carl achieved a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Rockhurst College in 1958 and his Master’s Degree in Business Administration after only three years of night school at the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1965. Both degrees were attained white raising a family and working full time at Armco Steel, through Armco's Educational Assistance Program. Carl worked at Armco Steel for forty years, in various capacities. He was a cost analyst, ran the accounting department at one point, and briefly managed Union Wire Rope until becoming the credit manager for the Kansas City division. While credit manager, he made multiple trips to Europe to assist in the start-up of the Armco plant in Italy. He retired from Armco in 1993. Among Carl’s many accomplishments and affiliations, he was a member of the Independence Public School Board 1972-1978; President of UMKC Alumni Association 1975-1976; President of the Independence Board of Education 1976-1978; Chairman, University of Missouri Extension Council of Jackson County 1979-1981; Extension Leader's Honor Roll of the University of Missouri in recognition for helping develop and carry out local extension programs 1980-1981; National Association of Accountants Twenty-Fiver Club 1984; Recognized by the Flat Rolled Steel Credit Group for his significant contributions to the organization's growth and progress “The high esteem in which he was held by all who knew him is a reflection of his dedication to the principles of good business and sound financial endeavor” 1993; he earned a place in the Royal Order of Jesters, Court 54 in 1997; analyzed stats and coordinated the Wings of Mercy Golf Classic, 2000; Honored as the Hugh L. Libby Award recipient, Royal Order of Jesters, Court 54, 2008.
Carl was a championship golfer, avid fly fisherman and woodworker. He was a very competitive spirit, and broke his fair share of golf clubs...
Carl’s professional life was finance, facts and figures, yet he never lost his innate ability to empathize and bring out the best in people, because he genuinely liked and cared about them. Never comfortable wearing the mantle of the boring accountant stereotype, he has often been described as being “just mischievous enough to keep things interesting.” Carl’s humor, charm and graciousness made for many fun times and wonderful memories.
Carl was a devoted husband and son-in-law. “He was the compass that guided me in life to be the best me I could be."
Preceding him in death were his parents, two sons Curt and Craig, three grandsons and father-in-law, Max Krueger.
Carl is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Leslie Krueger Milby, of the home; sister Carmen Martin, Buffalo MO; three daughters: Carla Bufton, Chicago, IL, Cheryl Martin and Crystal Leopold, Independence, MO; mother-in-law Shirley Krueger, Lebanon, MO; sister-in-law Allyson Peters, Springfield, MO; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The Memorial Service will be held Thursday, January 24, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E 39th St, Independence, MO. A reception and celebration of Carl’s life will be held immediately following the service at Ararat Shrine Temple, 5100 Ararat Dr, Kansas City, MO 64129.
