Mary Catherine Mitchell, 89 years old, died at the Jeanne Jugan Center on Aug. 12, 2007. She was born in Sugar Creek, MO on March 18, 1918 to Mike and Helen Roper. Mary attended Sugar Creek Elementary School, St. Mary’s High School and Business School. She married Tony Mitchell and moved with him to Spokane, WA. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper for Round Up Wholesalers while rearing her two sons, Robert (Bob) and John Mitchell.
In later years, Mary moved back to Sugar Creek, MO. She worked at the Lake City Arsenal and the McKessen Co. She then became the dedicated caregiver for her mother and served her needs for over fifteen years. After her mother’s death she became a volunteer at Little Sisters of the Poor in Kansas City, MO.
Mary will be remembered as a beautiful, bright and stately lady with a wonderful voice who loved to sing and dance. She did everything to perfection. She was an excellent housekeeper, cook and especially liked to bake pastries such as kolache, povitica nut bread, and apple strudel, which she generously shared with friends and family. She enjoyed helping others.
Mary was a devout Catholic and member of St. Cyril’s
Catholic Church and later St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was a resident of the Jeanne Jugan Center of the Little Sisters of the Poor.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Mike and Helen Roper and brothers Nick J. Roper, Marko Roper, R.J. (Rudy) Roper, Mike E. Roper and sister Kathryn Nauser. Her survivors are her beloved sons, Bob Mitchell of Woodland Hills, CA; John Mitchell of West Redonda Island, British Columbia, Canada and sister Rosemary Frechin of Lee’s Summit, MO as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews who enriched her life.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am, Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007 at St. Cyril’s Catholic Church in Sugar Creek; interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Wed. at Carson-Speaks Chapel, Lexington at Fuller, Independence, MO. In conjunction, the Rosary will be said at the visitation.
