Donald Gilbert “Don” Mizer, of Independence, MO passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at the age of 95.
He was born October 28, 1927, to Albert and Kathryn (Ingersoll) Mizer in Lebanon, Missouri. He was the oldest of 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
On October 4, 1952, he married his sweetheart Lucy Arlene Thomas. Together they embarked on a journey of 70 years that they both enjoyed until his passing. To this union, 5 children were born: David (Becky) Mizer, Cynthia (Tim) Schlicting, Lisa (Royce) Robertson, Kathleen (Jim) Johnson, and Karen (Barry) Watts. Don grew up helping his father on the family farm, learning the value of hard work.
At 21, he left the farm and pursued other employment. That pursuit would lead him into the trucking industry where he would drive for Linwood Ice Cream, Meadow Gold Ice Cream, and finally for Fleming Foods from which he would retire in 1992. He came to know of Jesus Christ and obeyed the gospel in 1951. With the help of his good wife, he remained a faithful member of the Church of Christ until his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, all of his siblings, and one son-in-law Tom Swearingen.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Arlene, all 5 of his children, 9 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to the staff of St. Croix Hospice. Without your love and guidance, this journey would have been far more difficult.
A visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 21st from 5-7pm at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. A graveside service will be held at 11am on Thursday, February 23rd at Cable Ridge Cemetery in Edwards, MO.
