Stephen Douglas Murray, 71, passed away on June 13, 2020 with his family by his side. A private celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
Stephen was born on April 8, 1949, in Kansas City, MO, to Robey Lowell Murray and Cecilia Wright Murray. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America and obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. Stephen was a graduate of North Kansas City High School in the class of 1967 prior to enlisting in the United States Navy. He served on the USS Lester as a Sonar Technician earning a National Defense Service Medal. Stephen was honorably discharged in 1970. He then attended the University of Missouri studying Theology.
He worked for KCP&L for several years, but his 16-year career was predominantly spent as a manager of sales with IWD Transportation. Stephen had many interests, and he dreamed big. He was a huge fan of music by Alvin Lee and Ten Years After, as well as Jennifer Rush. He loved working out and weightlifting. His family will always remember him as a warm, humble, kindhearted man and a wonderful father and grandfather who never knew a stranger.
Survivors include his three children: David S. Murray, Michael D. Murray (wife Kasey), and Alyssa E. Smith (husband Jeffrey); one stepdaughter Dawnie Crete; five grandchildren: Logan Murray, Alaina Donnell, Kailey Donnell, Sam Smith, and Lily Smith; and sister Elaine Murray (partner Lorie Friedman).
He was preceded in death by his partner Charlene Crete; his parents Robey and Cecilia Murray; and his sister Cecilia Jean McCoy.
