LLOYD THOMAS OSBORN
Lloyd Thomas Osborn, 91 of Independence, MO passed away on Thursday, October 17th 2013. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday Evening at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, Independence, MO. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 21st 2013 at Mound Grove Cemetery. Lloyd was born in Harrisonville, Missouri on May 31, 1922 to Zack Osborn and Sarah Elizabeth (Ethington) Osborn. His family moved to Illinois and then back to Missouri when he was a small child. He grew up in Independence and attended William Chrisman High School, graduating in 1940. After graduation he worked for Nevel’s Manufacturing until his enlistment in the United States Coast Guard in July of 1942. He served aboard the U.S.S. Oconee and the U.S.S. Sheliak until his discharge in October of 1945. He met his wife of 69 years, Margaret Lavina Stowell, at the Tasty’s Ice Cream Parlor on the Independence Square when he was home on leave. He ordered a chocolate malt from her, and when he finished with the malt and slurping on the straw, he asked, “Do you know what that means in California?” To which her reply was, “No.” So he smiled and said “It means it’s empty.” They were married August 13, 1944 in the backyard of her sister, Adeline Stinnett’s home. After returning from World War II, he worked at Standard Oil Refinery retiring in 1980. Lloyd loved nothing more than taking care of those around him, whether doing yard work for a family member, or offering a laugh in times of trouble. His kindness was one of his finest traits and his stories, some true and some not, will live on through his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many more friends and family. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church. Lloyd is survived by daughter, Linda T. McDonald; granddaughters, Sara Margaret McDonald, and Carrie Anne McDonald and countless nieces and nephews who loved and thought so much of their Uncle Lloyd. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Stowell) Osborn, who passed away just two and a half months prior on August 8, 2013; his parents, and his sister, Mary Ann (Hobson) Pope.
